Once the heart of the Inca Empire and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cusco offers travelers a fascinating mix of archaeology, colonial architecture, and vibrant Andean traditions.

Your adventure begins in Cusco, known as the “Archaeological Capital of the Americas”. Here, you’ll stroll through cobblestone streets, visit the impressive Plaza de Armas, and admire iconic landmarks such as the Cusco Cathedral and the Church of La Compañía de Jesús.

From the city, the journey continues into the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a fertile region filled with ancient sites and picturesque towns. Highlights include Pisac, famous for its colorful artisan market and mountainside ruins, Ollantaytambo with its monumental fortress, and Chinchero, known for its Andean textiles and terraces.

The tour then takes you to the crown jewel of Peru: Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. You’ll travel by train to Aguas Calientes and ascend to this legendary citadel, where a professional guide will reveal the history, engineering, and mysteries of the Inca civilization.

To complete your experience, the package also includes visits to other remarkable Inca sites such as Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Tambomachay, and Moray, showcasing the extraordinary stonework and agricultural ingenuity of the Incas.

Throughout your journey, you’ll enjoy opportunities to interact with local communities, taste authentic Peruvian cuisine, and immerse yourself in Andean culture.

Itinerary

DAY 1Arrival in Cusco & City Tour (Calm and Acclimatization Day)

Upon arrival in Cusco, our team will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your hotel, Airbnb, or hostel (depending on your flight schedule). After settling in, you’ll begin your adventure with a relaxing half-day Cusco City Tour, designed to help you acclimatize while exploring the most iconic sites of the Inca capital.

Your journey starts at Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun), once the most sacred temple of the Inca Empire, later transformed into the Santo Domingo Convent by the Spanish. From there, you’ll head to the outskirts of the city to visit the impressive Sacsayhuaman Fortress, famous for its massive stone walls and panoramic views of Cusco.

The tour continues with stops at Qenqo, a ceremonial site with carved rock altars; Puka Pukara, known as the Red Fortress, which served as a military control point; and Tambomachay, also called the Inca Baths, a fascinating site dedicated to water worship.

Depending on the timing, you may also visit the Inca Museum, considered one of the best archaeological museums in South America, offering an excellent introduction to Inca culture and history.

At the end of the tour, you will be taken back to your hotel to rest and prepare for the upcoming days of adventure.

Duration: Half day

Altitude in Cusco: 3,400 m / 11,155 ft

Difficulty level: Easy – perfect for acclimatization

DAY 2Sacred Valley of the Incas & Train to Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, we begin a full-day excursion through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, one of the most stunning and culturally rich regions in Peru. Traveling in a comfortable sprinter vehicle, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes and the majestic Urubamba River, also known as the Sacred River.

Our first stop will be at the Sacred Valley Viewpoint, where you’ll capture panoramic photos of the valley’s fertile landscapes. We then continue to Pisac, famous for its impressive archaeological park and vibrant artisan market, where you can see traditional Andean crafts and textiles.

The journey continues to Moray, an extraordinary site of circular terraces believed to have been an agricultural laboratory for the Incas. Nearby, you’ll visit the Maras Salt Mines (Salineras), where thousands of salt pools are still harvested using ancient techniques. Finally, you will explore Ollantaytambo, a remarkable Inca fortress and living town, before heading to the train station.

In the evening, you will board the Expedition Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town). The departure is usually at 19:04, with an estimated arrival around 20:45 (train schedules may vary due to high demand, but the itinerary will always be respected). Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay, preparing for your visit to Machu Picchu the following day.

Important notes:

  • This is a long and intensive day as we will visit five archaeological sites in one trip. Make sure to stay hydrated and take precautions against altitude sickness (Cusco and Pisac are around 3,400 m / 11,155 ft). Many travelers use Diamox or other altitude remedies, ideally starting two days before arriving in Cusco.
  • Dinner is not included but can be enjoyed in Ollantaytambo before boarding the train, or in Aguas Calientes after arrival.
  • Train luggage policy allows only a small suitcase + 20-liter backpack. We recommend leaving larger luggage at your Cusco hotel for convenience. If necessary, PeruRail offers luggage transfer service to Aguas Calientes at an additional cost.

Duration: Full day

Altitude: 2,800 – 3,400 m (9,186 – 11,155 ft)

Difficulty level: Moderate – long day with multiple visits

DAY 3Machu Picchu Guided Tour & Return to Cusco

Today is the highlight of your journey: the long-awaited visit to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

We will board the first ecological buses to reach the entrance of Machu Picchu. Our boarding times are organized as follows:

  • 5:30 a.m. (first group, entry at 6:00 a.m.)
  • 6:30 a.m. (second group, entry at 7:00 a.m.)
  • 7:30 a.m. (third group, entry at 8:00 a.m.)

To secure your spot, we’ll line up approximately 45 minutes before departure. The bus ride takes about 25 minutes, offering stunning views of the surrounding cloud forest. Upon arrival, you may witness a magical sunrise over Machu Picchu (weather permitting).

Your guided visit will follow Circuit 1 (the most complete route), allowing you to explore the main temples, terraces, and ceremonial areas of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guided tour lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, after which your guide will leave you at a strategic viewpoint to enjoy the site on your own.

According to current regulations, visitors can remain in Machu Picchu for a maximum of 4 hours. This gives you additional time to take photos, absorb the atmosphere, and appreciate the extraordinary engineering of the Inca civilization.

After the visit, you will return by bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time for lunch and a short walk around this charming town.

In the afternoon, we board the PeruRail Expedition Train at 2:55 p.m. from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, arriving at approximately 4:30 p.m. From there, private transport will take you back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival around 7:00 p.m., depending on traffic conditions.

Important notes:

  • Train schedules are subject to change due to high demand, but your itinerary will always be respected.
  • It is recommended to bring snacks and water for the morning visit, as food is not allowed inside Machu Picchu.
