Itinerary

DAY 1Cusco – Cusipata – Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain – Return to Cusco

our adventure begins early in the morning, when we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and embark on a scenic 3.5-hour drive towards the south of the region. Along the way, you’ll witness the beautiful Andean countryside dotted with traditional villages, herds of alpacas, and snow-capped peaks in the distance. Our destination is Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, locally known as Tres Arcoíris (Three Rainbows), one of the most stunning and lesser-known natural wonders near Cusco.

Upon arrival at the trailhead, located at approximately 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) above sea level, we begin a gentle and pleasant 30-minute walk. The trail is relatively flat, making it ideal for families, older travelers, or anyone seeking a rewarding hike without the difficulty of steep climbs. This is one of the most accessible rainbow mountain hikes in Peru.

As you ascend, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of three different rainbow-colored mountains, formed naturally by layers of mineral deposits. The vibrant hues of red, yellow, green, and blue make this landscape truly surreal. From the main viewpoint, you’ll have time to fully absorb the beauty of the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain range, take incredible photos, and enjoy the peace of a place still untouched by mass tourism.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore optional trails that lead to even more spectacular views or hike to the stone forest — a unique geological formation near the summit offering dramatic panoramic scenery. On clear days, you’ll also see the Ausangate Glacier in the distance, towering over the Andes as the highest peak in southern Peru.

Depending on weather conditions, we’ll spend between 1 to 2 hours exploring the area. During the visit, enjoy a delicious picnic-style lunch, freshly prepared by our local chef. If you choose the Rope Bridge extension, your lunch will be served as a boxed meal to enjoy along the extended trail. The nearby Red River may also appear during the rainy season, adding another layer of beauty with its striking crimson flow — a rare phenomenon caused by mineral-rich Andean soil.

After soaking in the natural wonders of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, we’ll begin our drive back to Cusco, arriving in the early evening with unforgettable memories of this peaceful, colorful paradise.

FAQ

What Are the Advantages of the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour Compared to Vinicunca?

The Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain tour offers several key advantages over the more popular Vinicunca hike, making it an excellent choice for travelers seeking a more relaxed and crowd-free experience in the Peruvian Andes:

  • Fewer crowds: Unlike Vinicunca, which receives large numbers of tourists daily, Palccoyo remains a peaceful destination where you can enjoy the natural beauty without the rush or noise.
  • Shorter and easier hike: Palccoyo involves an easy 30-minute walk on relatively flat terrain, while Vinicunca requires a strenuous 6 km uphill hike at high altitude.
  • Three rainbow mountains: From a single viewpoint, Palccoyo offers panoramic views of three distinct rainbow-colored mountains, as well as the chance to visit the nearby Stone Forest and, during the rainy season, the Red River.
  • Family-friendly: This tour is ideal for families with children, older travelers, or anyone looking for a rewarding high-altitude experience without intense physical effort.
  • Same stunning visuals with less effort: While less famous, Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain delivers equally breathtaking scenery as Vinicunca—with more comfort and less physical strain.

For travelers looking for an alternative Rainbow Mountain hike that is quiet, scenic, and accessible, Palccoyo is the perfect choice.

Is Palccoyo a Good Option for Seniors or Children?

Yes, Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is an excellent choice for seniors and children, thanks to its accessible and gentle hiking conditions. Unlike the more demanding trek to Vinicunca, the hike to Palccoyo involves a short, 30-minute walk on mostly flat terrain, making it suitable for travelers of all ages and fitness levels.

The route is peaceful and less crowded, with fewer altitude changes, which helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness. The stunning views of the three rainbow mountains, combined with the calm environment, offer a rewarding experience without the need for strenuous physical effort.

For these reasons, Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is often recommended as one of the best family-friendly day trips from Cusco, especially for those looking for a scenic and stress-free adventure in the Andes.

What’s the Weather Like in Palccoyo and What Should I Wear?

The weather at Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain is typical of high-altitude Andean regions: cold in the early morning and evening, with strong sun around midday and the possibility of sudden rain showers, especially during the rainy season (December to March).

During the day, temperatures usually range between 5°C and 15°C (41°F to 59°F). Because of the elevation and intense sun exposure, it’s essential to dress appropriately to stay warm and protected from UV rays.

Recommended clothing for the Palccoyo tour:

  • Layered clothing (to adapt to changing temperatures)
  • Waterproof or windproof jacket
  • Warm fleece jacket
  • Lightweight long pants
  • Thermal underwear
  • Sun hat and gloves
  • UV-protection sunglasses
  • High SPF sunscreen
  • Waterproof trekking boots

Wearing the right gear will help you stay comfortable throughout the hike and fully enjoy the colorful landscapes of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain.

Can I Bring Drones or Professional Cameras to Palccoyo?

Yes, you can bring professional cameras to capture the stunning scenery of Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain — they are widely permitted and even encouraged. However, drones come with specific rules:

  • Permit required: Flying a drone at Palccoyo is allowed only with prior permission and payment of a local fee (around S/50–S/60, approximately US $12–15)
  • Community regulations: Permission must be requested from the local community (Cusipata or Pitumarca), and in some tours, a fee or permit is mandatory
  • Group vs. private tours: Some group tours prohibit drone use to avoid delays or disturbances, but private or small-group tours usually allow it if the necessary permission is obtained .
