The Manu National Park is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in southeastern Peru, between the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios, this vast protected area covers more than 1.5 million hectares (3.7 million acres). It includes a wide variety of ecosystems, from the Andean highlands to the lush Amazon lowlands, making it one of the most pristine natural environments in the world.
Our Manu Tour 4 Days is designed to immerse you in this unique ecosystem, offering a perfect combination of adventure, wildlife observation, and cultural encounters. Over the course of four days, you will explore the rainforest with an expert local guide and a small group, ensuring a personalized and authentic experience.
During the journey, you will:
This 4-day adventure provides all the logistics you need—transportation, meals, accommodation, and guided tours—so you can simply enjoy the wonders of Manu without worrying about organization.
The Manu National Park is not only Peru’s largest natural reserve but also one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world. Exploring it on a 4-day tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with nature at its purest.
Your Manu Tour 4 Days begins with an unforgettable journey from the Andes into the Amazon rainforest. We start early in the morning, picking you up from your accommodation in Cusco at 5:00 a.m.. From there, we travel across picturesque inter-Andean valleys, passing through small traditional communities.
On the way, we’ll cross the highest point of the route at 4,000 m / 13,123 ft, before visiting the Pre-Inca archaeological site of Ninamarca (3,000 m / 9,842 ft) and the charming colonial town of Paucartambo (3,025 m / 9,924 ft), known as the folklore capital of Cusco. Here, we’ll explore its cobblestone streets and visit a fascinating local museum.
We then continue to the Acjanaco Pass (3,535 m / 11,597 ft), the official entrance to the Manu Biosphere Reserve. From this point, the landscape changes dramatically as we descend into the lush Cloud Forest, where our adventure truly begins.
Along the way, we’ll enjoy a box lunch while admiring the biodiversity that makes this area so special. With luck, we may spot the Cock of the Rock (Peru’s national bird), as well as orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and even troops of woolly monkeys.
In the late afternoon, we arrive at our eco-friendly accommodation in the Cloud Forest, Bambu Lodge, where we’ll have dinner and spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.
Total travel time: approx. 9 ½ hours (not including stops).
🌱 All our tours directly support the local economy by working with community-run lodges and services. In addition, we contribute to a reforestation program to offset carbon footprints, planting native species such as Aguano (Cedrelinga sp.), Aguaje (Mauritia sp.), and Pacae (Inga sp.).
After a hearty breakfast at Bambu Lodge, we continue our adventure deeper into the Amazon. Our journey begins with a stop at the Hummingbird Garden, a magical spot where you can observe different species of these colorful and energetic birds up close.
From there, we travel by minibus to the Atalaya Pier (500 m / 1,640 ft), where we board a private motorized boat to navigate the Alto Madre de Dios River. As we glide downstream, keep your eyes open for wildlife such as egrets, swallows, kingfishers, and neotropical cormorants.
After about 40 minutes on the river, we reach a stone beach and begin a short trek through the rainforest until we arrive at the Machuhuasi Pond. Here, we’ll explore the calm waters on a traditional balsa raft, an excellent opportunity to spot unique Amazonian birds such as the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), often called the “living fossil” for its reptilian traits, and the Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta), famous for its loud calls. We’ll also climb a small observation tower for panoramic views of the jungle canopy.
Following this, we’ll enjoy a picnic-style box lunch before continuing by 4×4 vehicle to reach our accommodation, Dorado Lodge (300 m / 984 ft).
In the afternoon and evening, our guide will lead us on jungle walks along nearby trails, where we can learn about medicinal plants, observe fascinating bird species, and with some luck, spot caimans along the riverbanks.
We end the day with dinner and an overnight stay at Dorado Lodge, surrounded by the sounds of the tropical rainforest.
We start the day very early with breakfast, followed by a meaningful activity: our reforestation program. Each traveler will plant a native tree species according to the forest zone, such as Tornillo (Cedrelinga sp.), Pacae (Inga sp.), or Aguaje (Mauritia sp.). Using traditional tools, we walk into the forest, choose the planting spot, mark it with GPS, and take photos as part of your personal contribution to the conservation of Manu’s rainforest.
After this rewarding experience, we continue along the jungle trails in search of colorful birds like the Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna), Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), and Red-and-Green Macaw (Ara chloropterus). With some luck, we may also encounter playful troops of Brown Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus apella). We return to Dorado Lodge for lunch and a short rest.
In the afternoon, you’ll have the chance to cool off with a refreshing swim in the river or try traditional fishing techniques with the locals—if we’re lucky, we might even catch some Amazonian fish.
After dinner, we head to a special observation platform located near a mammals clay lick (collpa). In silence and under the cover of night, we wait for one of the Amazon’s largest mammals, the elusive Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), to appear. With patience and luck, this unforgettable wildlife encounter could be one of the highlights of your Manu adventure.
Overnight stay at Dorado Lodge.
We begin very early with a hot drink before heading out to one of the most exciting wildlife experiences: the Parrots Clay Lick (Collpa). From a hidden observation blind, we quietly wait as hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay. With a bit of luck, you may spot species such as the rare Blue-headed Macaw (Primolius couloni), Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara severus), Blue-headed Parrot (Pionus sp.), and vibrant Amazon parrots (Amazona sp.). This natural spectacle is one of the most unforgettable highlights of Manu.
After the activity, we return to Dorado Lodge for breakfast and prepare for our journey back to Cusco. First, we travel by 4×4 vehicle to Villa Salvación, and then continue by private minibus through the scenic Cloud Forest, enjoying a box lunch along the way. Depending on the weather, we may stop for short walks to spot more wildlife and soak in the lush Andean–Amazonian transition.
We expect to arrive in Cusco around 5:00 pm, marking the end of this incredible adventure through Manu’s Amazon Rainforest.

The Manu Tour 4 Days can be done year-round, but the best season is during the dry months from April to October. During this time, trails are easier to walk, river navigation is smoother, and wildlife is more active and visible. In the rainy season (November to January), the Amazon can still be visited, but heavy rains may affect activities and wildlife sightings.
At Andes Peru Expeditions, we recommend planning your trip in the dry season for a more comfortable experience, while always keeping in mind that the Amazon’s climate is unpredictable and part of its adventure.
During the Manu Tour 4 Days, travelers have the opportunity to spot an impressive variety of Amazonian wildlife. Among the most remarkable species are:
Birds: the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird), scarlet, green and blue macaws, parrots, toucans, herons, hoatzins, and the rare blue-headed macaw.
Mammals: woolly monkeys, capuchin monkeys, capybaras, and with some luck, tapirs visiting the clay licks.
Reptiles and amphibians: caimans, frogs, and different lizard species.
Insects and butterflies: countless colorful butterflies and unique Amazon insects.
Through jungle hikes, boat rides, and visits to clay licks, this adventure maximizes your chances of experiencing close encounters with the rich biodiversity of Manu National Park.
The Manu Tour 4 Days is considered a moderate adventure that combines boat rides, short hikes, and wildlife observation. Travelers should be comfortable with walking on jungle trails, sometimes in humid or muddy conditions, and able to handle warm tropical weather. No advanced trekking experience is necessary, but having a basic level of fitness will make the journey more enjoyable. The tour is suitable for most travelers, including families with children, as activities are designed to be accessible and paced according to the group.
Yes, during the Manu Tour 4 Days travelers have the opportunity to interact with local communities along the route. These visits allow you to learn about traditional customs, daily activities, and the close relationship that local families maintain with the Amazon rainforest. Meeting local people adds a cultural dimension to the adventure, complementing the wildlife and natural experiences of Manu.
The Manu Tour 4 Days offers a deeper and more immersive experience compared to shorter tours. With four days, travelers can explore a greater variety of ecosystems, from the cloud forest to the lowland rainforest, while also having more chances to spot wildlife such as macaws, monkeys, caimans, and even tapirs. Shorter tours, on the other hand, provide only a brief introduction to the Amazon, focusing on nearby areas with less time for exploration and fewer opportunities to observe the park’s incredible biodiversity.
Yes, the Manu Tour 4 Days can be suitable for families with children and older travelers, as long as they are in good health and comfortable with outdoor activities. The itinerary involves long drives, boat rides, and light to moderate walks in the rainforest. Lodges along the route provide basic but comfortable accommodations, and meals are included. Parents should be aware that the Amazon environment is humid and warm, with insects present, so bringing appropriate clothing, insect repellent, and sunscreen is important. For older participants, the tour is generally manageable without strenuous trekking, but flexibility and a positive attitude are recommended to fully enjoy the experience.
