Itinerary

DAY 1Sacred Valley Experience

Your journey begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel around 6:30 AM. The first stop is Chinchero, a picturesque Andean town known for its breathtaking mountain scenery, traditional textile cooperatives, and well-preserved Inca ruins that still echo the past.

Next, we continue to Moray, a remarkable archaeological site with massive circular terraces. Scholars believe this was an advanced agricultural laboratory where the Incas experimented with different microclimates and crops. Not far away lies the famous Maras Salt Mines, where locals have been harvesting salt from natural springs for centuries—an extraordinary sight of thousands of white salt pools across the mountainside.

Around midday, enjoy a break at a carefully selected local restaurant for lunch (not included), a chance to taste authentic Andean flavors.

In the afternoon, discover the living Inca town of Ollantaytambo, a fascinating blend of ancient stone streets, vibrant markets, and the impressive fortress ruins that once served as both a temple and a strategic stronghold.

DAY 2Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco Hotel

Today is the highlight of your journey: the visit to the legendary Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

Depending on your assigned entry time (based on how early you book), your guide will let you know the best wake-up time. If you have an early ticket, you will leave around 5:00 a.m. to catch one of the first buses and witness the sunrise over the ruins. If your entry is later, you can enjoy a more relaxed morning before boarding the bus up to the site.

Your guided tour lasts about 2 hours, during which your expert guide will show you the most important temples, terraces, and ceremonial areas while sharing the history and significance of Machu Picchu. Afterward, you’ll have free time to explore on your own.

If you pre-booked the optional hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (additional cost), you will have time to enjoy the climb and admire breathtaking panoramic views.

In the afternoon, return by bus to Aguas Calientes, then board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where a private vehicle will be waiting to transfer you to Cusco. Expected arrival at your hotel is between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

FAQ

What Places Do You Visit in the Sacred Valley Before Reaching Machu Picchu?

Before arriving at Machu Picchu, most tours include a journey through the highlights of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a region that blends history, living culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Some of the main stops are:

  • Chinchero – A picturesque Andean town known for its traditional weaving workshops, stunning mountain views, and Inca archaeological site with impressive terraces.
  • Moray – Unique circular terraces believed to be an ancient agricultural laboratory where the Incas experimented with different microclimates.
  • Maras Salt Mines – Thousands of dazzling white salt pools on the mountainside, in use since pre-Inca times and still worked by local families.
  • Ollantaytambo – A living Inca town with cobblestone streets and a massive archaeological complex featuring temples, terraces, and panoramic views of the valley.
  • Pisac – Famous for its extensive agricultural terraces and vibrant handicraft market, offering textiles, ceramics, and silver jewelry.

Exploring these sites not only reveals the rich history and culture of the Sacred Valley, but also allows travelers to acclimatize to the altitude and fully enjoy the journey before reaching the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu.

What Is the Best Time of Year to Book the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu Tour?

The best time to visit the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu is during the dry season, from April to October. These months offer sunny days, clear skies, and ideal conditions for hiking, sightseeing, and photography.

  • May and September are often considered the best months, with stable weather, lush green landscapes after the rains, and fewer crowds compared to peak season.
  • June to August is peak travel season, with many visitors from the U.S. and Europe. The weather is excellent, but it’s essential to book trains, tickets, and hotels well in advance.
  • November to March is the rainy season. While Machu Picchu remains open, the weather can be unpredictable and trails slippery. On the positive side, you’ll find fewer tourists and vibrant scenery.

In short, for the best weather and overall experience, plan your Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu tour between April and October, and reserve early if traveling during peak season.

What fitness level is required for this tour?

The Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu – 2 days tour is considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for most travelers with a basic fitness level. The journey is mostly by tourist transport (bus and train), with short walks at archaeological sites such as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu.

The main factor to consider is the altitude. Cusco sits at 3,400 m (11,150 ft) and Machu Picchu at 2,430 m (7,970 ft). Some visitors may experience shortness of breath or mild fatigue at the beginning. To enjoy the trip comfortably, we recommend:

  • Spending at least 1–2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley beforehand to acclimatize.
  • Wearing comfortable walking shoes and light clothing.
  • Staying well hydrated and carrying small snacks.

Overall, this tour is family-friendly and ideal for travelers of all ages who want to explore the Andes at a relaxed pace, without requiring strenuous physical effort.

What is the difference between this tour and the classic Machu Picchu tour from Cusco?

The main difference lies in the experience before reaching Machu Picchu.

  • Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu (2-Day Tour):
This option combines the highlights of the Sacred Valley with Machu Picchu. On the first day, you explore impressive Inca sites such as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and sometimes Maras and Moray, while enjoying breathtaking Andean landscapes and local culture. In the afternoon, you take the train to Aguas Calientes, where you spend the night in a comfortable hotel. On the second day, you enter Machu Picchu early with a guided tour and extra time to explore at your own pace.
  • Classic 1-Day Tour from Cusco to Machu Picchu:
This tour focuses only on Machu Picchu. It is a faster itinerary: early train ride from Cusco or the Sacred Valley, guided visit to the citadel, and return on the same day. It’s a great choice for travelers with limited time, but it doesn’t include the cultural and scenic experiences of the Sacred Valley.
  • In short, the 2-Day Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu tour offers a more complete, relaxed, and enriching journey, while the classic 1-day tour is a quicker option designed mainly for visiting Machu Picchu itself.

Is the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu Tour Recommended for Families with Kids?

Yes, the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu Tour is highly recommended for families with children. This 2-day itinerary is designed to be comfortable and family-friendly, combining private transportation, cultural visits, and a guided tour of Machu Picchu at a relaxed pace.

On the first day, kids will enjoy exploring Inca terraces, traditional villages, and breathtaking Andean landscapes without the need for long or strenuous hikes. Spending the night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes makes the journey smoother and more enjoyable for the whole family.

On the second day, the guided tour of Machu Picchu is flexible, allowing parents and children to explore at their own rhythm. Families can take breaks, enjoy panoramic views, and learn fascinating stories about the Inca civilization in an engaging way. Bringing snacks, sunscreen, hats, and light clothing is recommended to make the experience even more pleasant.

Overall, this tour is a safe, educational, and fun adventure, perfect for families who want to experience the magic of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu together.
