Your Lares Trek adventure begins early in the morning. We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 5:00 a.m. and drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the traditional village of Huaran (2,920 m / 9,580 ft) — the starting point of your unforgettable Lares Trek Peru experience.
After a freshly prepared breakfast by our private chef, we start hiking along the scenic Lares Valley Trek, surrounded by beautiful Andean landscapes, small streams, and farmlands of corn and potatoes.
After about 2 hours of gentle hiking, we stop for lunch in a peaceful spot with breathtaking mountain views. We then continue for about 1 more hour to reach the Cancha Cancha community (3,950 m / 12,959 ft) — one of the most authentic Andean villages on the Lares Trail Peru.
Here, you’ll have the chance to meet local Quechua families, learn about their traditional weaving techniques, and see alpacas and llamas grazing freely. In the afternoon, enjoy a warm tea (“happy hour”) and a delicious dinner before resting under a clear Andean sky filled with stars — the perfect first night of your Lares Trek 4 Days adventure.

After a warm cup of coca tea, we start the second day of our Lares Trek — the most challenging yet rewarding part of this journey.
We’ll hike uphill for about 3 hours to reach the Pachacutec Pass (4,700 m / 15,419 ft), the highest point of the Lares Trek itinerary. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, turquoise Andean lakes, and herds of llamas and alpacas roaming the highlands.
At the top, we’ll take time to honor the Apus (mountain spirits) with a traditional Andean ceremony — a special moment that connects you deeply to Inca traditions and culture.
We’ll then descend for about 1.5 hours to our lunch spot by a peaceful lake and continue to Quiswarani Village (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), a small community surrounded by waterfalls and green valleys. There, we’ll enjoy tea, dinner, and stories about life in the Andes — a truly authentic experience on this off-the-beaten-path trek in Peru.

After breakfast, we begin our last hiking day of the Lares Trek Peru, climbing gently for about 2 hours to the Willkikasa Pass (4,400 m / 14,435 ft). From here, enjoy magnificent views of the Cuncani Valley, colorful lagoons, and herds of alpacas.
Keep an eye out for wildlife such as chinchillas, Andean foxes, and native birds. We’ll descend to Cuncani Village for lunch before heading to the famous Lares Hot Springs Peru, where you can relax in natural thermal pools surrounded by mountain scenery — the perfect reward after trekking through the Andes.
Later, we drive to Ollantaytambo, enjoy dinner, and take the train to Aguas Calientes (2,040 m / 6,993 ft). You’ll stay overnight in a comfortable hotel, preparing for your visit to Machu Picchu — the perfect ending to your alternative trek to Machu Picchu.

Today is the highlight of your Lares Trek adventure — the visit to the legendary Machu Picchu! After an early breakfast, we’ll take a short bus ride (25 minutes) to the citadel, arriving around sunrise to enjoy the mystical atmosphere before the crowds.
Your guide will lead a 2–3 hour tour through the main temples, terraces, and sacred sites. You’ll also have free time to explore on your own or hike to the Sun Gate, Inca Bridge, or — with advance reservation — Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
In the afternoon, we’ll return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch, then take the train back to Ollantaytambo, and finally a private transfer to Cusco. This marks the perfect conclusion of your Lares Trek to Machu Picchu, one of the most scenic and culturally rich trekking routes in Peru.

The 4-day trek is considered moderate. Hikers should be prepared for high-altitude passes above 4,500 m (14,700 ft), cold temperatures at night, and daily walks of 5–7 hours. No prior trekking experience is required, but a good basic fitness level is recommended. With well-planned itineraries, support from guides, and the option of emergency horses, the route is accessible for most travelers in good health.
The best time to hike this 4-day route is during the dry season, from May to September, when you can expect sunny days, clear mountain views, and stable trails. The rainy season (November to March) brings heavier showers and slippery paths, but the landscapes are lush and green. April and October are considered transition months, offering fewer crowds and mixed weather conditions.
Hiking time varies depending on the section of the route. On average, travelers walk 5 to 7 hours per day, covering different terrains such as steep mountain passes, high-altitude lagoons, and valleys with traditional villages. The longest day is the ascent to the high pass at 4,500 m (14,763 ft), while the shortest day involves less walking and more cultural exploration before taking the train to Aguas Calientes.
You don’t need advanced training or special preparation, but a basic fitness level is recommended. The main challenge is the altitude, as the route reaches 4,500 m (14,763 ft), which can make hiking more demanding. Regular exercise such as walking, light jogging, or cardio before your trip will help. It is also advisable to spend a couple of days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
