The hike from Soraypampa to Humantay Lake usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours uphill, with the return descent taking around 1.5 to 2 hours. The total walking time is approximately 4 hours round trip. Along the trail, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped peaks, Andean valleys, and local farmland, with rest points for photos and breaks. Guides accompany all participants for safety and to share insights about the area.
The ideal time to visit Humantay Lake is during the dry season, from May to September, when the skies are clear and the trail conditions are best. These months offer sunny days, minimal rainfall, and the most stunning views of the turquoise lake and surrounding snow-capped mountains.
The wet season (November to March) brings rain, slippery trails, and sometimes clouds that can obscure the lake and mountain scenery. For the most enjoyable and safe hiking experience, planning your trip during the dry season is highly recommended.
Yes, acclimatization is important. The hike to Humantay Lake starts in Soraypampa at 3,900 m (12,795 ft) and reaches the lake at 4,200 m (13,779 ft). Because of these altitudes, we recommend that travelers spend at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the excursion. During this time, you can enjoy lighter activities such as a Cusco City Tour or a Sacred Valley experience, which will help your body adapt gradually.
This preparation reduces the risk of altitude sickness and allows you to enjoy the turquoise waters of Humantay Lake and the views of the Salkantay Glacier with more comfort and energy.
The hike to Humantay Lake is considered moderate in difficulty. The trail is not very long—about 7 km / 4.3 miles round trip—but the high altitude makes it more challenging. Travelers should be prepared for a 2 to 2.5-hour uphill hike with steep sections.
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness and some hiking experience will make the walk more enjoyable. Trekking poles can be helpful, and we recommend acclimatizing in Cusco for a couple of days before the hike. With the right preparation, most travelers find the trek very rewarding.
