This unique itinerary brings together the highlights of the Vilcanota mountain range, combining breathtaking natural beauty with cultural encounters that will stay with you forever.

During this journey, you will explore the sacred Ausangate Mountain, considered the spiritual protector of the region and admired for its snow-capped peaks that rise above 6,000 meters. DAY 1Cusco-Pitumarca-Quesiunoi-PukaCocha Pass-Ananta-SurineCocha

Your Ausangate Trek 2 Days adventure begins early with a 4:00 am hotel pickup in Cusco. After a scenic three-hour drive through traditional Andean villages, we arrive at Alcatarwi trailhead, the starting point of our trek. Here, you’ll meet our professional mountain team, including your expert guide, cook, and horseman, who will provide a delicious breakfast to energize you before setting off.

The hike starts with a gentle uphill walk of about 1.5 hours, leading to the breathtaking Puka Cocha Pass (4,985 m / 16,355 ft). From this vantage point, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic Andean landscapes: snow-capped peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and rolling valleys dotted with llamas and alpacas. Our guide will share fascinating insights into the geology, flora, fauna, and cultural traditions of the Ausangate region, enriching your experience.

Continuing on, we follow a pleasant one-hour trail across open highland terrain to reach Ananta (4,750 m / 15,584 ft), where we pause for a freshly prepared lunch. Afterward, the route becomes more challenging with a steady two-hour ascent to the Warmisaya Pass (4,985 m / 16,355 ft). From here, you’ll be rewarded with your first distant glimpse of the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), a highlight of the trek.

Our descent then takes about one hour to the tranquil Surine Cocha Lagoon, a hidden gem at the base of the mountains. This will be our campsite for the night, offering an unforgettable setting to relax after a rewarding day of trekking. As night falls, the high-altitude skies reveal a dazzling view of the Milky Way, making this one of the most magical experiences of your short Ausangate hike.

FAQ

What level of fitness is recommended for the Ausangate Trek 2 Days?

The Ausangate Trek 2 Days is considered a moderate to challenging hike, mainly because of the altitude (between 4,300 and 5,200 m / 14,100–17,000 ft) and the variable mountain weather. You don’t need to be a professional athlete, but having a good overall fitness level and being used to long walks in mountainous terrain is highly recommended.

On average, you will hike 10 to 15 kilometers (6–9 miles) per day, spending about 5 to 7 hours on the trail, including steep ascents and descents that can be demanding on the legs and knees.

👉 Key recommendations for travelers:

  • Acclimatization: Spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting the trek, to adapt to the high altitude and minimize the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Physical preparation: Doing hikes, walks, or cardiovascular exercises (running, cycling, swimming) in the weeks leading up to your trip will make the trek more enjoyable.
  • Age: Travelers of all ages can join as long as they are in good health. Older adults or those with medical conditions should consult their doctor in advance.
  • Extra support: Trekking poles and proper gear (thermal clothing, waterproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots) will help a lot during the hike.

What is the difference between the Ausangate Trek 2 Days and the longer treks?

The Ausangate Trek 2 Days is a short but intense adventure, designed for travelers who have limited time but still want to experience the majesty of the Ausangate mountain range. In just two days, you will see stunning turquoise lakes, glaciers, sacred peaks, and the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), often with fewer crowds.

The longer treks (4, 5, or 6 days), on the other hand, provide a deeper and more complete experience:

  • Greater immersion: You will explore less-visited trails, encounter traditional Andean communities, and see multiple colorful lakes.
  • Slower pace: With more days, there is time to enjoy the landscapes at a relaxed rhythm while acclimatizing better to the altitude.
  • Extended adventure: These treks include crossing high mountain passes, camping at different sites, and exploring much of the traditional circuit around Mount Ausangate (6,384 m / 20,945 ft).

What is the best time of year to do the Ausangate Trek 2 Days?

The best time to hike the Ausangate Trek 2 Days is during the dry season in the Andes, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more stable, skies are usually clear, and the views of mountains, lakes, and glaciers are at their best.

👉 Seasonal overview:

  • May to September (dry season): Sunny days, cold nights (temperatures can drop below freezing at high altitude), well-maintained trails, and the clearest landscapes. This is the most recommended season.
  • April and October (shoulder season): Generally good conditions, with occasional rain showers and fewer tourists compared to peak season.
  • November to March (rainy season): Frequent rains, muddy trails, and cloudy skies. Although the scenery is greener and there are fewer visitors, it is not the safest option for those seeking clear views and stable weather.

Is the Ausangate Trek 2 Days suitable for beginners in trekking?

The Ausangate Trek 2 Days is not the easiest option for those who have never done trekking, as the route takes place at high altitude (between 4,300 and 5,200 m / 14,100–17,000 ft), with demanding ascents and unpredictable mountain weather.

However, beginners with good physical condition and motivation can still complete it by taking some precautions:

  • Acclimatize for at least 2–3 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek.
  • Walk at your own pace with the support of the guide and use trekking poles.
  • Have the proper gear such as thermal clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and a waterproof jacket.
  • Be mentally prepared for 5–7 hours of hiking per day in mountainous terrain.

What landscapes and unique attractions can be seen on the Ausangate Trek 2 Days besides Rainbow Mountain?

During the Ausangate Trek 2 Days, you will not only visit the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) but also experience a variety of unique Andean landscapes. Along the trail, you can admire turquoise lakes formed by glacial melt, valleys surrounded by snow-capped peaks such as the impressive Ausangate (6,384 m / 20,945 ft), and vast highland plains where llamas and alpacas roam freely.

Another highlight includes glaciers and multicolored rock formations, showcasing the geological richness of the region. The trek also offers close encounters with local Andean communities, where ancestral traditions and ways of life are still preserved.
