A reasonable level of stamina and endurance is recommended, as the trail covers about 10 km (6.2 miles) with some uphill sections. Frequent breaks along the route allow you to rest, take photos, and enjoy the stunning Andean landscapes, making the experience accessible for most travelers in good health.

For travelers concerned about altitude, acclimatization in Cusco for at least 1-2 days before the trek is highly recommended. The tour also provides support from experienced guides, first aid kits, and optional emergency oxygen, ensuring a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Can You Do the Ausangate 7 Lakes Full Day Tour if You’ve Never Hiked at High Altitude?

The hike reaches a maximum altitude of 4,630 m (15,200 ft), so altitude can be challenging for some. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • Acclimate in Cusco for 1-2 days before the trek.
  • Take your time during the hike, resting frequently and enjoying the scenery.
  • Stay hydrated and follow your guide’s recommendations.

The trek is moderate in difficulty, with gentle slopes and well-marked trails. You’ll also have support from experienced local guides, first aid kits, and optional emergency oxygen, making it a safe adventure even for first-time high-altitude hikers.

The hike covers about 10 km (6.2 miles) with sections at high altitude up to 4,630 m (15,200 ft). While the trail is well-marked and moderate in difficulty, children may need frequent breaks to adjust to the altitude and enjoy the scenery.

What is the Altitude on the Ausangate 7 Lakes Full Day Tour and How to Prevent Altitude Sickness?

The Ausangate 7 Lakes Full Day Tour takes you through high-altitude terrain, reaching a maximum elevation of 4,630 m (15,200 ft) at the highest point of the trail. Most of the hike is above 4,000 m (13,100 ft), so altitude sickness (soroche) can affect some travelers, especially if you are not acclimatized.

To prevent discomfort and enjoy the trek safely:

  • Acclimate in Cusco for at least 1-2 days before the hike.
  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Walk at a steady pace, take breaks often, and listen to your body.
  • Avoid heavy meals and alcohol the day before and during the hike.
  • Chew coca leaves or drink coca tea, a traditional Andean remedy that may help with mild symptoms.
  • Our experienced local guides are trained to monitor guests, and the tour provides a first aid kit and emergency oxygen if needed.

With proper preparation, most travelers enjoy the trek without issues and are rewarded with breathtaking views of turquoise lakes, snow-capped peaks, and pristine Andean landscapes.

Can the Ausangate 7 Lakes Full Day Tour Be Combined with Rainbow Mountain?

Yes! Many travelers choose to combine the Ausangate 7 Lakes Full Day Tour with a visit to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), but it requires careful planning because both are full-day high-altitude treks.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Timing: Both treks are physically demanding and start early in the morning. It is possible to do Rainbow Mountain the day before or after the 7 Lakes tour to avoid fatigue.
  • Altitude: Both routes reach high elevations (over 4,600 m / 15,000 ft for 7 Lakes and 5,000 m / 16,400 ft for Rainbow Mountain), so proper acclimatization in Cusco is essential.
  • Guides and Transport: Many tour operators, including ours, can arrange private tours or packages that combine both experiences with reliable transportation from Cusco.
  • Experience: Combining both treks allows travelers to enjoy the most spectacular Andean landscapes, turquoise lakes, colorful mountains, and cultural encounters in a few days.

With good planning, it’s a rewarding and unforgettable adventure, perfect for those who want to experience the best of the Andes.
