After the tour, enjoy free time to explore the Inca citadel on your own before returning to Cusco by train or bus (not included).

Important: Our guided visit to Machu Picchu is scheduled for the 6:00 or 7:00 am entry slots, which conveniently align with the return options by bus or train. We highly recommend securing your ticket in advance for these early times, as availability is limited and circuits fill up quickly.

🔔 After these time slots, visitors will need to explore Machu Picchu on their own, as our guided service only operates during the early morning hours. However, it’s still possible to listen to information shared by other groups while inside the citadel, if you’re visiting without a guide.

How to Book Machu Picchu Tickets in Aguas Calientes

We do not include the Machu Picchu entrance ticket in the base price of the tour unless tickets are already available. Machu Picchu tickets are subject to strict daily limits, and availability is not guaranteed. There are around 900 tickets released each day at the official ticket office in Aguas Calientes, which you can try to purchase in person.

If you wish to include the entrance ticket with your tour, please ask about availability before booking. The ticket is an additional cost of USD 40 to 50, depending on the selected circuit.

You can choose from several ticket circuits (each with different access routes and views), and we will help you book the best available option depending on what’s open at the time.

Once your ticket is secured, you can then organize your return to Cusco based on your visit time—either by bus and train or by foot and car, both options being subject to availability.

We highly recommend booking your Machu Picchu entrance in advance to guarantee your spot and avoid last-minute stress.

Note: Depending on the season and ticket availability, you might need to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes to secure your Machu Picchu tickets, as these are not included in the tour package.

First: Book your Machu Picchu ticket, then proceed to reserve your train or bus based on your preferred return option.

Return from Aguas Calientes to Cusco: Your Options Explained (Not Included in the Tour)

We do not include the return journey to Cusco in this package, but here we explain the two main options so you can choose the one that best fits your plans. Train and bus tickets can be reserved upon request and are subject to availability.

🚆 Train Option: Scenic & Comfortable

Your train ticket is typically scheduled for 2:30 pm, 2:55 pm, or 3:20 pm, depending on availability. To return to Aguas Calientes after visiting Machu Picchu, you can:

  • Walk down from the site (approx. 1 hour), or
  • Take a 30-minute bus ride (USD 12) (optional)

Once in town, you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch, explore the local shops, or simply relax. Be sure to arrive at the train station 30 minutes before departure.

The train to Ollantaytambo takes about 1.5 hours, offering spectacular views of the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, you can take a taxi or bus (approx. 15 soles). Buses and taxis operate frequently, as many locals travel daily between Ollantaytambo and Cusco and vice versa.

The drive from Ollantaytambo to Cusco takes about 2 hours, with a final drop-off at Plaza Regocijo, around 6:30 pm.

🚗 Car Option: Hike & Jungle Drive

What fitness level is required to complete the Inka Jungle Trek?

The Inka Jungle Trek is a unique adventure experience that combines trekking, biking, rafting, and zip-lining through stunning landscapes. To complete this 4-day, 3-night tour, a moderate level of fitness is recommended.

While no prior mountaineering experience is needed, you should be prepared for daily walks of 2 to 3 hours, with uneven terrain, steep descents, and gentle ascents. The first day includes exciting activities like biking and rafting, which add extra challenges but make the trek more accessible for those who enjoy outdoor activities.

At some points, you’ll reach altitudes of up to 4,316 meters (Abra Málaga), so it’s good to be accustomed to walking at moderate altitudes. The bike descents on the Inka Jungle Trail can be challenging, but activities like rafting and zip-lining are exciting yet beginner-friendly.

If you are an active person who enjoys hiking and outdoor adventures, the Inka Jungle Trek is a great option for you—no need to be an expert in extreme sports! This trek is designed for those seeking moderate challenges while enjoying the natural and cultural beauty of Cusco and Machu Picchu.

How is the Inka Jungle Trek different from the traditional Inca Trail?

The Inka Jungle Trek and the traditional Inca Trail are two iconic routes to Machu Picchu, but they differ significantly in difficulty, landscapes, and activities. Here are the main differences between these two trekking experiences in Peru:

  • Activities:
The Inka Jungle Trek is a multi-adventure route combining trekking, biking, rafting, and zip-lining, making it a more dynamic choice for travelers seeking an adrenaline-filled experience. On the other hand, the traditional Inca Trail focuses exclusively on trekking along ancient paths, emphasizing hiking and cultural exploration.
  • Difficulty:
The Inka Jungle Trek is moderately challenging, suitable for active people who enjoy adventure but don’t need advanced mountaineering skills. The traditional Inca Trail is more demanding, with steeper routes and a constant climb to Machu Picchu, making it physically more challenging.
  • Landscapes:
Both treks offer stunning landscapes, but the Inka Jungle Trek traverses a wider variety of terrains, from high Andean mountains to tropical jungle. The traditional Inca Trail primarily focuses on mountain landscapes and archaeological sites along the way.

Can I do the Inka Jungle Trek during the rainy season?

Yes, you can do the Inka Jungle Trek during the rainy season, but there are a few important things to consider. The rainy season in Peru generally lasts from November to March, with frequent rainfall, especially in the high jungle regions like the Inka Jungle Trek.

  • Weather Conditions:
During the rainy season, the weather can vary from light rain to heavy downpours, usually in the afternoon. However, the rain is not constant throughout the day, and you can enjoy clear mornings for activities like trekking, biking, and zip-lining.
  • Adapting to the Climate:
If you decide to do the trek during the rainy season, it’s important to be well-prepared for the weather. Waterproof clothing (like ponchos and jackets), water-appropriate footwear, and insect protection are essential. Plus, the Cocalmayo hot springs are a great way to relax after a day of trekking, especially if the weather is cooler due to rain.
  • Safety:
Guides from Andes Peru Expeditions are well-trained to handle changing weather conditions and ensure the safety of travelers. Although the terrain can become slippery due to rain, the Inka Jungle Trek routes remain safe as long as you follow the guide’s recommendations.
  • Benefits of the Rainy Season:
The rainy season offers a unique beauty to the trek. The landscape becomes even greener and more lush, with waterfalls and rivers flowing at their fullest. You can also experience the region’s biodiversity, as flora and fauna are more active during this time.

How safe are activities like rafting and zip-lining on the Inka Jungle Trek?

Rafting and zip-lining activities on the Inka Jungle Trek are completely safe when done under the supervision of professional guides and following established safety standards. Both activities are exciting and unique parts of this multi-adventure tour, but safety is always a top priority.

  • Rafting:
Rafting on the Vilcanota River is done in controlled, exciting rapids. The guides from Andes Peru Expeditions are highly trained to handle the river’s conditions and guide travelers safely. They provide quality equipment, including life jackets, helmets, and high-quality rafts. The water difficulty level is moderate, making it suitable for beginners and those with intermediate experience.
  • Zip-lining:
Zip-lining is another thrilling moment on the Inka Jungle Trek, where travelers zip across the tropical jungle at high altitudes. The platforms and cables are regularly inspected, and the zip-lines meet strict safety standards. Guides provide a full safety briefing before the activity, and safety equipment like harnesses, helmets, and gloves are provided. This activity is designed to be fun but safe for all participants.
  • Trained Staff:
Guides from Andes Peru Expeditions are certified in adventure activities, first aid, and rescue. They ensure that all travelers are informed about safety procedures before starting any activity and are comfortable with what each entails. Support vehicles and emergency protocols are also in place if necessary.
  • Risk Management:
Before each activity, a thorough equipment check and safety briefing are given to ensure all participants understand the instructions. Activities are only carried out when the weather conditions are suitable, ensuring that both rafting and zip-lining are safe and enjoyable.
  • Safety Tips:
To make the most of these activities, it’s recommended to wear comfortable, water-appropriate clothing and be prepared for any eventuality. Guides are always present to monitor safety and well-being throughout the trip.

How many people usually participate in a group for the Inka Jungle Trek?

The Inka Jungle Trek with Andes Peru Expeditions is designed for small, personalized groups, ensuring a more intimate and authentic experience. Generally, groups consist of up to 12 people, allowing for more individual attention and a better connection with the local environment and culture.

  • Small Groups:
With a maximum of 12 participants, this group size ensures that all travelers can enjoy a more comfortable and personalized experience. Activities like rafting, zip-lining, and hiking are safer and easier to manage in smaller groups.
  • Personalized Attention:
Small groups allow guides to dedicate more time to each traveler, offering more personalized attention and ensuring that everyone feels comfortable during the activities. It also allows for better interaction with local communities and a more authentic experience.
  • More Relaxed Experience:
Small groups are ideal for those seeking a quieter, less crowded adventure. Travelers also have more flexibility in the itinerary, allowing them to enjoy the landscapes, activities, and moments of relaxation without the pressure of larger groups.
  • Social and Friendly Atmosphere:
Although the Inka Jungle Trek is an adventure experience, it also focuses on creating a social and friendly environment. With a small group, participants can interact more easily with others, creating shared memories and possibly making new friends along the way.
  • Perfect for Different Types of Travelers:
Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or as a couple, the Inka Jungle Trek is perfect for those looking for a group experience without the crowds. The combination of small groups and adventure activities makes it ideal for travelers seeking action and nature without compromising the quality of the experience.
